Delhi: Man held for killing friend over Rs 3,000 loan

NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old man was arrested for murdering his friend over a loan of Rs 3,000. Both of them had done BTech from North East Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya. The accused was earlier booked in a rape case in Assam.

The murder came to light on October 25 after the duo’s neighbors complained of a foul smell emanating from their locked rented accommodation in Tukhmirpur of Khajuri Khas. Police broke open the door and found the decomposed body of the victim, Amit. Brick and wooden plank stained with blood were found in the room. A probe revealed that Amit had not spoken to his colleagues or family members for two days.

Police got the first clue in the case after Amit’s card was used to withdraw Rs 2,500 from an ATM at Kashmere Gate. “An image was generated from CCTV footage from the ATM and shown to Amit’s friends, who told police that it looked like their classmate Pranjal Deka. Later, it was confirmed that Deka and Amit had studied together at NEHU,” said DCP (Northeast) Ved Prakash Surya. Deka was traced to Assam, but by the time police reached there he had boarded a train to Delhi. He was arrested from Ghaziabad railway station.

It was found that Deka was unemployed and would often ask Amit for money. On the day of the murder, Amit snapped at Deka for constantly asking for money but never returning it. They both then went to sleep. Amit’s words had pricked Deka so much that he woke up in the middle of the night, picked up a brick and bludgeoned him to death. He used the wooden plank to make sure Amit was dead.
